The making of the world’s first needle-free glucose monitor

How it works?

We developed a platform technology that uses magneto-hydrodynamics to gently transport molecules without needles or breaking the skin. For detection, we rely on well-established enzymatic biosensing chemistry — trusted for decades in glucose monitoring and capable of medical-grade precision.

Through careful integration of physics, biology, and engineering, these components work together to enable accurate, needle-free glucose monitoring.

High quality sample

Put simply, Sofio acts like a glucose magnet. When activated, its patented magnetohydrodynamic technology draws glucose-containing interstitial fluid gently through the skin — without needles. The glucose levels in the fluid are then analysed.

Modular design

Sofio has two parts: a reusable transmitter and a replaceable sensor. They connect through a simple plug-and-play mechanism, and the sensor attaches to the skin using a peel-and-stick method.

Ultra sensitive detection

A thin, enzymatic biosensor measures the glucose in interstitial fluid with medical-grade precision. Feather-light: the transmitter weighs 22 g and the sensor 2 g.

Built for scale

The transmitter contains all electronics and can be reused hundreds of times.

The sensor uses a tiny enzyme-based sensing film instead of electronics, making it clean to manufacture at scale and affordable to replace.

Tried and tested, thousands of times

Sofio’s technology has been used and tested by hundreds of people in the past 6 years and has undergone tens of thousands of laboratory tests to ensure performance, safety, and consistency.
